He is the academic leader in the Research of Testing Technology and Instruments of Materials’ Microscopic Performancethe director of Public Technical Research Center of Materials Service Performance Testing Industryas well as the vice-chairman of National Standardization Technical Committee for material testing machine. He is the senior member of CMES, council member of Precision Machinery TC of CIS, etc.

As the project leader, he has taken charge of National KeyScientific Instruments and Equipment Development Projects, National High Technology R&D Program(863), International Cooperation Project of Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China and so on, a total of 28 national and provincial projects with a total funding of about 70 millionyuan. Based on the research work, 9 kinds of theoretical methods of calibration correction for the accuracy ofinstruments were proposed and 8 kinds of micro mechanical properties testing instruments were successfully developed (some are internationally pioneering). The developed instruments are popularized in about 20 units, including Peking University, CAEP, CISRI, etc. These instruments provided technical support for the performance testing analysis and reliability evaluation of materials’ security service in rail transport, culvert tunnel, nuclear energy, aerospace, manufacturing of equipment and in other fields.

   49 national invention patents and 78 utility model patentshave been authorized. 5 international patents were applied in America, Japan and Europe, among them 7 patents have been transformed into implementation in CIMACHand other enterprises. Prof. Zhao has hosted the formulating of 9 industrial standards of the PRC, acquired 5 software copyrights and published two English chapters. As publishing approximately 160 academic papers, in the SCI published 79 papers and EI 61 papers, the achievements have been highly reported by AIP, IOP and Science daily, etc.10 international famous academic organizations and science and technology media.
