Mechanical optimization design is a new subject developed in the early 1960s, which provides the principles of optimization and computational techniques for design. Based on the new scientific method, people can obtain the optimum from many designs for greatly improving the efficiency and quality of design. Therefore, optimization design is an important domain of modern design theory and methodology, and it has been widely used in various industrial departments. Mechanical optimization design includes establishing mathematical models of optimization problems and selecting appropriate optimization methods and software.

This course is for undergraduates major in mechanical engineering. In the course, the basic principles and analysis processes of mechanical optimization design will be introduced systematically, while Matlab and ANSYS will be taken as tools. The aim of the course is to ensure the students to master the basic theories and design methods of mechanical optimization, and improve the ability of dealing with actual engineering problems.
