Mechanics of materials is a branch of applied mechanics that deals with the behavior of solid bodies subjected to various types of loading. The principal objective of mechanics of materials is to determine the stresses, strains, and displacements in structures and their components due to the loads acting on them. The task of mechanics of materials is to provide a simple and practical means for analyzing the strength, stiffness and stability of members so as to give the data for engineering design, so that the requirements of both safety and economy are satisfied.

This course is for engineering undergraduates. In the course, the basic principles and analysis processes will be introduced systematically. The aim of the course is to provide the future engineers with the means of analyzing and designing various machines and load-bearing structures.
