Traditional design method of hydrodynamic torque converter is based on one-dimensional flow theory, which simplifies three-dimensional flow field to one-dimension, therefore this theory cannot correctly reflect the internal flow phenomenon. Besides, this method based on experience and a large number of external characteristic experiment is an open-loop design combined with opaque chamber, which means that every development of product must go through a process of trial manufacture - test - improvement - remanufacturing, however this process could not ensure the performance of products, instead, it will waste a lot of time and money.

With the development of our national industry of engineering machinery, the series and types of hydrodynamic torque converter are constantly being increased, which makes the usability of products becomes more and more pertinence and timeliness. In this case, a higher requirement of performance matching, development costs and development cycle of hydrodynamic torque converter has been proposed.

In order to solve the limitations in traditional design method of hydrodynamic torque converter, one modern design method based on three-dimensional flow theory is first proposed in domestic by combining computational fluid dynamics with laser flow visualization technique. It has successfully tackled the key technologies in analysis of visualization flow field, blade forming and 3D transient calculation of flow field. It also has effectively solved the problems of the invisible flow and curved surface forming in the 3D space. Furthermore, one design system that including pre-design, blades design, performance analysis, parameter adjustment, internal flow field test, mold design and prototype fabrication is established, which has high commercial value.

Modern design method of hydrodynamic torque converter not only breaks the limitations in traditional design method, but also makes a significant contribution to promote the efficiency of product development, reduce the cost of development and improve the quality of product. With the application of this method, a series of high-performance hydrodynamic torque converters have been developed, such as hydrodynamic automatic transmissions and hydrodynamic torque converters equipped in heavy truck designed by Hangzhou Advance Gearbox Group Co., Ltd. and hydrodynamic torque converters equipped in engineering machinery designed by Liugong Machinery Co., Ltd., these products have been widely used on vehicles and have obtained much applause from the customers.
