The brief introduction of the mechanical basic experimental teaching center

The mechanical basic experimental teaching center in Jilin University was founded in 1997. The center originally integrated and developed from five laboratory units, including Engineering graphics laboratory, Metalworking laboratory, Mechanical principles laboratory, Mechanical design laboratory, and Precision metrology laboratory, which were established in the Jilin Institute of Technology in 1956. With the foundation of the center, the application to be one of the construction units of the national engineering mechanical basic teaching base was approved in 1997. In 1999, the center received the construction from the World Bank Loan Project. In 2004, the center was listed as first batch universities of the Jilin province key construction basic experimental teaching center. Moreover, the center was approved as the Jilin Province college student science and technology innovation practice demonstration base in 2007. In the same year, the center was evaluated as the national mechanical basic experimental teaching demonstration center (Construction unit). By the end of 2013, all construction projects mentioned above have passed the evaluation and acceptance. Furthermore, in January 2016, the 2015 national-level virtual simulation experiment teaching center was approved.

Currently, there are 56 faculty members, among them are 40 experimental teachers, 14 experimental technicians and 2 workers. In the teaching center, most team members have strong educational and researching background, including 24 teachers with doctorates, 14 with master degrees, 10 with Bachelor’s and 8 with others, among which the team members with intermediate and senior titles have accounted to 93 percent relative to the total number. The center has 3 departments and 1 experimental center, and covers an area of 3600 square meters, possesses 1673 sets of experimental instrument and equipment. Annually, the center offers 29 experimental courses, 111 experimental projects and 9 professional practices for over 5000 students from 24 sections of 7 colleges, and achieves the class quantity over 174.6 thousand human hours with the annual average.

Relying on the strong research strength of the mechanical discipline (national first-level discipline) and the management mechanism of combining teaching with scientific research formed by the experiment teaching team, the experimental teaching center has formed a echelon with greater capabilities for teaching profession and scientific research, and the structure of the echelon is relatively reasonable in the proportion of the teachers’ ages, professional titles and academic credentials.

By now, the amount of undertaken and completed teaching research projects has achieved to 34, which are promoted by the national, Jilin province and Jilin University. The center has won 10 kinds of Teaching Achievement Awards, among which there are 2 Second Prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Awards and 2 Teaching Achievement Award issued by the Jilin province as well as 3 Educational Technology Achievement Awards. In addition, more than 10 million Yuan has been obtained as the construction funds, offered the construction of 44 comprehensive, design and innovative experiment projects, established 1 virtual simulation experiment teaching platform, and opened 32 virtual simulation experiment projects. As for teaching practice, it has been explored by ourselves and we have acquired the equipment 219 sets, published the national planning experiment teaching material and lecture up to 26 species, and 11 teaching materials have been approved as the 12th Five-Year planning books. In order for education innovation, 33 papers have been published in various kinds of magazines and journals for teaching research. The college students' innovation foundation of Jilin province has been established. More than 500 students have participated in contests held by the nation, Jilin Province and Jilin University, and have won up to 50 awards, both amounts and the level of awards come out in front in mechanical specialty of domestic universities.

The application of experimental teaching equipments, software and materials with self-researched independently have been promoted to more than 10 domestic universities. Apart from this, the center has provided experimental education services for more than 570 students from other universities, and trained professional nearly 3000 from government and industry companies. In order to improve the quality of education, experimental teachers have participated in exchange, learning and training in domestic and foreign, and the amount has reach up to 140 person-times.

For the development of the experimental education, the center carries out two-level administration of the Jilin University and the Mechanical College. The center director takes entire responsibility for implementation of the center, undertakes daily management works, guides the experimental teaching activities, and organizes the experimental curriculum development and the compiling teaching materials. Based on the rules and regulations formulated by the Jilin University and the Mechanical College, the center has constituted the first-class experimental teaching platform for students.

For years of construction, experimental teaching reform and practice, the center has formed distinguished characteristics in cultivating high-quality mechanical engineering talents. The modern practice teaching platform based on network technology and the engineering college students' innovation foundation have been established, which significantly improved the effects of series courses of mechanical basis experiment and practice teaching. Through organically combined the mechanical basis experimental teaching with professional and practice teaching, scientific research and personal hobbies, we have effectively cultivated students’ abilities in autonomous learning, independent problem-solving, comprehensive design and innovative practice.
