1.  Self-introduction

My name is Lu Guangfu. I am a 2nd year master student of Industrial and Engineering, School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Jilin University.I have attended the conference 2015 International Symposium on Semiconductor Manufacturing Intelligence (ISMI 2015), which is hold on October 16-18, 2015 at KAIST in Daejeon, South Korea. In the conference, I have gave a presentation about my recent research work “A new differential search algorithm for the flow shop scheduling with intermediate buffers”.

2.    Conference introduction

The 2015 International Symposium on Semiconductor Manufacturing Intelligence (ISMI2015) aims to provide a platform to foster the exchange of research developments and latest practice on automation science & engineering, operations research, evolutionary algorithms, data mining, manufacturing informatics, and decision analysis for semiconductor manufacturing intelligence to enhance collaborations to address critical research and industrial issues. Following the great success of ISMI in Taiwan (2012), Shanghai (2013) and Taiwan (2014), the 2015 International Symposium on Semiconductor Manufacturing Intelligence (ISMI 2015) is held on the KAIST campus in Daejeon, South Korea.

ISMI 2015 consists of 8 sessions, Manufacturing Excellence I, Scheduling & Dispatching, Statistics quality and Yield I, Metaheuristic & Heuristic Methods, Manufacturing Excellence II, Equipment Modeling & Optimization, Statistics quality and Yield II and Planning & Decisions. There are 3 plenary talks in ISMI 2015, they are Professor Mitsuo Gen of the Fuzzy Logic Systems Institute and the Tokyo University of Science in Japan, Professor Chen-fu Chien of the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, and Professor Minseok Song of UNIST in South Korea. The conference sponsors are the KAIST Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, VMS Solutions., Ltd., the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineering (KIIE) and the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on SemiconductorManufacturing Automation.

3.    My presentation in the conference

I have gave my presentation in the session of Scheduling & Dispatching, the title is “A new differential search algorithm for the flow shop scheduling with intermediate buffers”. I am the last one in this session. The time limitation of each talk is 20 minutes. 15 minutes of the time is to give the speech and 5 minutes is to answer the questions proposed by the listeners. With a little nervous and uneasy feeling, I opened my PPT. I gave a self-introduction and began the other contents. Maybe this time is special, during the whole process of speech, I found that I am not nervous.Prior practice for the speech may make contribution to this result. After I finished my talk, and then came the Q & A step.A Korean in the front of the hallasked me about the benchmark of my paper.Because of his accent or my hearing problem, I did not quite understand what he proposed.Fortunately, the chairman of thissession explained this to me, finally I answered this question. Then Taiwanese people asked me question. I have to say that I am used to this English accent, and answered the question fluently. In the break time, I met a Japanese man. Maybe he is a teacher. We discussed the algorithms such as GA, PSO and so on.Next, I will list the abstract of my paper “A new differential search algorithm for the flow shop scheduling with intermediate buffers”.

In this article, a new differential search (DS) algorithm is proposed to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan) for a flow shop scheduling problem with intermediate buffers located between two consecutive machines. In order to solve the discrete problem, the permutation is generated by sorting random numbers. Compared with the hybrid discrete differential evolution (HDDE) algorithm, the proposed DS algorithm either in structure or performance is better than it. In structure, DS used random rearrangement to finish mutation. Different from a one-to-one mutation strategy of the HDDE algorithm, the random rearrangement strategy of DS algorithm improved the efficiency of mutation and reduced the running time. After mutation, a random way was used to filter out some individuals, and then a DC operation was conducted to insert jobs to find a better sequence. In computational simulations and comparisons stage, the two algorithms used the same benchmark and stop condition to compare the performance. Through a lot of experiments, it showed that the performance of DS algorithm for solving flow shop scheduling problem is better than HDDE algorithm.”

4.    My felling

In this conference, it is an honor to meetso many of scholars and it is also a good the opportunity to listen to English reports. On the one hand, I have learned a lot of professional knowledge and related technology of my research direction. On the other hand,it is a good opportunity for me to improve my oral English. During the breaktime, I am able to freely communicate with participants. It is a good opportunity to build friendships with foreigners, make me deeply understand on some issues which are very important in my future research. After participating the conference, I have learned many useful research methods and strategies.

Finally, I would like to thank the school for giving me such a good opportunity to participate in international academic conferences. Owning to the teachers of Graduate School of Jilin University, School of Mechanical Engineering, and the International Office, students like me can participate in international conference. For further, I would like to thank my mentor Shan Hongying associate professor, because of her support and kind help, I could participate the conference successfully.
