Fundamentals of Manufacturing Technology

Course Title: Fundamentals of Manufacturing Technology A – Bilingual (88 hours/5.5 credits, Spring term)

Course Object: Fundamentals of Manufacturing Technology A is a mandatory course for all mechanical-related majors, is the high-standard course of Jilin Province, and is one of the major components within the national engineering fundamental education base in Jilin University. The bilingual teaching content contributes an important part of this course that enables the students reach the state-of-the-art manufacturing technology in western countries, broaden the horizons, improve the practical English abilities, intracultural communication skills and professional knowledge. This course features strong practicability and utility, laying a solid foundation for solving technical problems in real-case manufacturing process, and is a main stream fundamental course for mechanical engineering students. The objects of this course is to train the student 1) master the basic principles of the metal cutting process; 2) grasp the knowledge of mechanical manufacturing; 3) chose the suitable manufacturing method, machine tool, cut tool, clamp tool and associated parameters; 4) master the basic theory and knowledge for the mechanical manufacturing accuracy and surface quality; 5) capable of designing manufacturing process and clamp tools. By bilingual teaching, the students are expected to be kind of innovative engineering highly-qualified personals (HQP), which have profound humanities, international horizons and excellent intracultural communication skills. By practical teaching part, students can have enhanced engineering design abilities and solve practical engineering problems.

Course Content: The course is divided to 7 chapters. The course introduces the production process of mechanical products and its manufacturing process and system, including the metal-cutting process and its principles, knowledge of machine tools, cut tool and clamp tools, design of manufacturing process and assemble process, accuracy of mechanical manufacturing process and its surface quality control, the state-of-the-art and trend of manufacturing technology.

Target students: Target students are undergraduates from department of mechanical science and engineering, department of automotive engineering and department of biological and agriculture engineering. The students are required to finish following courses prior to take this course: Mechanical Principles, Mechanical Design, Engineering Materials, Material Forming Technology and Metal Working, etc.
