The School of Mechanical Science and Engineering(SMSE) in Jilin University is based on the Mechanical Department of Changchun Automobile and Tractor Institute founded in 1955,which was merged from some specialists of Jiaotong University,Huazhong Institute of Technology and Shandong Institute of Technology.Due to national education reform, School combination and specialty adjustment, a new school was first established by merging Department of Construction Machinery, Department of Mechanics and part of Department of Agricultural Machinery from Jilin University of Technology. And then some related specialtiesof Changchun University of Science and Technology, Jilin University, Changchun Institute of Post and Telecommunications in 2000 was grouped into a School called SMSE in Jilin University.
SMSE comprises five departments and three teaching centers of machinery basis. For the departments, there are Department of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Department of Mechanical Design and Automation, Department of Mechanicaland Electronic Engineering, Department of Engineering Mechanics and Department of Industrial Engineering. For the teaching centers of machinery basis,we have Teaching and Research Divisionof Engineering and ComputerGraphics, Teaching and Research Division of Mechanical Principle and Design and Experimental Teaching Center of Machinery Basis.There are three undergraduate programs in SMSE, i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics and Industrial Engineering. SMSE has doctoral programs in the fields of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation,MechanicalDesign and Theory, Mechatronic Engineering, Solid Mechanics and Industrial Engineering. SMSE was among first batch approved to build doctoral programs for the advanced manufacturing in China. In addition, we also have two postdoctoral programs in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.
The Mechnical Engineering of SMSE has the first level National Key Disciplines receiving strong support from Project 211 and 985.The school boasts its advantages and characteristics in the CNC Reliability, Intelligent Precision Manufacturing,Engineering Equipment of Modern Design Theoriesand Methods, Microstructure Performance Testing Technology and Instruments, Construction Robot, Fluid Power Transmission and Electro-Hydraulic Control, Structural Vibration Analysis and Control, and Manufacturing System Integration. There are four technological innovation platforms, engineering equipment experiment centers and national accredited laboratories: CNC Equipment Reliability Technology Key Laboratory of Mechanical Industry, Vehicle Parts of Jilin Province Key Laboratory of Advanced Manufacturing Technology and System, Jilin Province Advanced Automotive Components Manufacturing Technology Engineering Research Center, Engineering Equipment Design and Manufacture of Advanced Key Laboratory. In recent years, SMSE is responsible for the national high level scientific research projects: National Project 973, National Science and Technology Major Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Major/Key Projects 863, Major National Scientific instruments and so on.
After 60 years of development, the schoolhas reached an enrollment ofover 1,600 undergraduate students, 900 graduate students and is the home of 230 faculty and staff members. More than 20,000 graduates studentsincluding Professor WangLi-Ding and Yan Chu-Liang, member ofChinese Academy of Sciences,have obtained their master or Ph.D. degree and made an important contribution to the development of Chinese mechanical industry.
