As an academic visitor under the funding support by China Scholarship Council, Pei Yong-Chen did some fundamental researches in the Center for Engineering Dynamics, School of Engineering, University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, from Mar 2013 to Mar 2014 by cooperating with Professor Huajiang Ouyang. He understood the non-stationary dynamics of spinning discs deeply, and investigated the thermoelastic dynamics of high speed rotating flexible disk under air flow convection and system heat transfer with finite boundary conditions. These works widen his horizon on the multi-fields coupling dynamics, and enrich research with some cutting edge means and methods.

According to the study plan, from Mar 2013 to Sep 2013, he borrowed, downloaded and read many articles and references on the research fields from the library in University of Liverpool to learn the novel applications, research status and developing tendency of high speed rotating disk. He took part in some fundamental courses in University of Liverpool, such as Heat and Mass Transfer, Engineering Vibration and Dynamics, Engineering Optimization, these courses not only improve his level of English and Teaching, but also widen his knowledge fields and strengthen research foundation. He participated in many academic activities and conferences in University of Liverpool, the dynamic problem on Reliability and Uncertainty widens his horizon greatly. By talking with some famous professors in these conferences, a lot of important ideas and valuable helps were obtained to support current researches and generate great encouragement for his further investigations. In the context of hard disc drives, multi-fields coupling dynamic problem was modeled under air flow, external and internal heat sources, system coupling heat transfer, vibration of rotating flexible disk. With the help of Professor Huajiang Ouyang, system mathematical equations were derived by using the penalty finite element method, and the nonlinear equations were solved efficiently within a large rotational speed range.

According to the study plan, from Sep 2013 to Mar 2014, under the direction of Professor Huajiang Ouyang, Pei Yong-Chen collected the works in the past half year, and analyzed the radial, circumferential, transversal velocity distribution, enclosure-shaft- disk-air temperature distribution, aerodynamic heating, and rotating disk natural frequencies physically. Then a related journal paper has been published as: Dynamic interaction of heat transfer, air flow and disc vibration of disc drives - theoretical development and numerical analysis. International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Dec 2014, 89(C): 362-380. After that, He have established the non-symmetric aeroelastic dynamic model for the fully coupling between disk and air with the disc’s initial transverse runout, and obtained steady state response from parallel calculation in Matlab program. Some new phenomena were found in this fully coupling aeroelastic dynamic model from the air flow pressure distribution and disc’s vibrational deflection, and system dynamic stability was analyzed.

During the year in University of Liverpool United Kingdom, his study and research were very rich and substantial. This experience is very valuable in the view of horizon widening and knowledge harvesting for his teaching and research works in future.
